SIGNS THAT YOUR TREE IS DEAD
When a tree is healthy, your responsibility stops at the fence line, but when a tree is dead, any damage caused to your neighbor’s property is the responsibility of the tree owner. Identifying a dead or dying tree and assessing a plan of action is an important part of home ownership. The Arborists at Crews Tree Service are experts at removing dead trees and eliminating threats to you and your neighbor’s property. Call today to schedule an appointment for an on-site inspection!
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
- Broken sticks and branches on the ground around the tree
- No leaves, dead leaves, bare branches
- One side of the tree is bare, but not the other side
- Bare spots in the tree bark, bark is falling off
- Open wounds
- Areas of the tree have visible fungus or rot
- The tree is starting to lean
- Termite/pest infestation and damage
- Damage to the roots
THE SCRATCH TEST:
So, you have identified some of the signs listed above. What do you do next? Scratch the top layer of bark on the tree trunk. The layer underneath is called the cambium layer. If a tree is alive and well, the cambium layer will be green. If the tree is dead or dying, the cambium layer will be brown and dry. If the cambium layer appears to be brown and dry, call a certified Arborist like Crews Tree Service to confirm your findings.
PLAN OF ACTION:
An Arborist will be able to inspect your tree and determine if it can be treated and saved, or if it needs to be removed. If the tree is determined to be dead, it should be removed immediately by a licensed tree removal company, so it will no longer potentially cause property damage. Crews Tree Service can facilitate resolution for both situations. Our certified Arborist will diagnose a sick tree and treat it back to health, or we can perform an emergency tree removal.
